Welcome Note
Welcome to my first
Newsletter. First off, thank you for taking the time to
read this, I know all too well how much junk we get in
our In Boxes and unfortunately these days, when we
are short on time, we have to be very selective on what and
who we give our precious time to.
When I decided to
create my newsletter, I had a very clear vision in mind, and
that was to give my readers relevant information on
hypnosis and it's benefits, relevant studies and findings on
the subject as well as other healing modalities.
All this to keep you well informed. Reason for
this? Quite simple really: when you have more
information, choices and tools, you will be in a
position to make a more informed decision when it comes
to your health and the health of your loved
ones.
However, since I'm someone who enjoys life in all
it's form and think it is equally as important for all of us
to have some fun and laugh, I will include not so serious
material as well. This will be in the form of humor and
other fun stuff. So, in addition to being well
informed, you'll be releasing happy hormones by reading the
'not so seerious' stuff, and we all could use more of those
happy little guys, also knows as endorphins.
Having said all this, I invite you to give your
feedback and ideas as to what you would like to see and read
about. After all, if you don't find anything interesting
to read, there is not point in having the newsletter in
the first place. Please email me with your comments and
suggestions @ joanna@turningpointhypnotherapy.com or simply reply to this email.
It is my sincere wish that over the next months, as
this publication grows and evolves, you will read lots of
material that you will find interesting, amusing, intriguing
and funny.
Sincerely, Joanna Banka, RCH, CHtA,

Little bit about me...
My roots go back to Eastern Europe
where non-traditional wellness and healing techniques are far
more integrated into the social fabric and day to day life
than commonly found in North America. As a result
of this early exposure and acceptance of alternative
strategies to healing the mind and body, I began researching
different healing
modalities.
I have
researched and practiced elements of psychology, spirituality
and alternative healing modalities such as Reiki and
Hypnotherapy for over 12 years. All this has led me to
focus my attention exclusively on the benefits associated with
hypnotherapy.
This
included crystallizing my talents through formalizing my
education in the field of hypnotherapy and ultimately earning
the title of a Registered Clinical
Hypnotherapist.
I have
completed the Master of Clinical Hypnotherapy programme with
the Crossroads Training
Institute where I graduated with over 250 hours of
practical experience. In addition, I have earned
specialty certifications in Hypnoanaesthesia & Pain
Management and Time Line Protocol
Therapy.
I
assists my clients in overcoming their personal barriers by
drawing upon compassion and a strong technical
foundation which
includes advanced root causation techniques such
as: Regression, Ego States Therapy (also known as
Parts Therapy), and Time Line Protocol
Therapy. These powerful techniques focus on
the root cause of client issues and as a result, have a
lasting effect as compared to "suggestive therapy" (reading
scripts), which tend to be less effective and not
permanent.
My
practice is founded on the core belief that each individual
holds the tools to change their lives for the better and my
role in this ongoing process is to empower clients to find
those tools from within. My environment is free of judgment,
creating an extremely effective therapist-client relationship
thus accelerating the healing process. My specialty is working
with trauma, self esteem issues and weight
management.

Hypnotherapists (ARCH)

What is Hypnosis Anyway? - Part
I
Before anyone
experiences hypnosis and starts using it to make wonderful,
beneficial changes in their life, this article is designed to
perhaps answer a few questions you may have and also to dispel
few myths and misconceptions about hypnosis.
You know,
I still meet people that believe that experiencing hypnosis is
like being unconscious. I always reply, "What would be the
point of that? Spending money and time to be unconscious in
someone else's company?? If I wanted you to be unconscious we
would simply bash you over the head!" So it is important that
you also know that hypnosis is not about being unconscious and
that you have the correct expectations about the hypnotic
experience that you are going to have, should you choose to
experience hypnosis for yourself with a
qualified hypnotherapist.
In order to understand
hypnosis, it is important to understand and differentiate
between our minds. By that I am referring to our conscious
mind, where we are now and just below that level of awareness
is our unconscious mind (also known as the subconscious mind,
for the purpose of easy understanding they are the same
thing).
The conscious mind is where we usually spend
most of our waking time, you know that internal dialogue we
have that thinks "hmmm, what should I have for
lunch today" that is your conscious mind. Your conscious
mind basically does four things;
Firstly, our
conscious mind analyses. What is that? Well that is the part
of us that looks at problems, analyses them and tries to
create solutions to those problems. It is that part of us that
makes decisions all day every day "Shall I open the door?",
"Shall I have something to eat", even though they are
automatic behaviours, we make a conscious decision about
whether to do these things.
The second part of our
conscious mind is our rationale, the part of us that,
especially in western cultures, always has to know "Why"
things happen and "Why" we behave in particular ways.
The
third part of our conscious mind is will power, that
teeth-gritted determination that so many of us are proud to
demonstrate. How many times have we used our will power alone
to make changes and found that our will power weakens and that
change is temporary or non-existent.
The final part of
our conscious mind is the short-term memory. By that I am
referring to the things that you need to remember to function
on a day-to-day basis, so that when your phone rings you know
to answer it rather than to stare at it wondering what it is,
or ensuring that you cross the road without being run over.
That is the conscious part of our mind, it is logical,
rational and analytical, a bit like Mr. Spock from the Start
Trek series and as much as it pains me to say it, our
conscious mind is frequently wrong about things.
Our
conscious mind is wherever we happen to be pointing it at
any given time. I am sure you have been in a busy, noisy
environment, such as a restaurant or a bar and have been
engaged in a conversation with another individual, and all the
sounds going on around you just seem to blend into the
background. Then someone else ten metres away can punctuate
their sentence with your name and you pick it out as if it was
being spoken to you. This illustrates that unconsciously, you
are aware of many, many pieces of information every second of
your life, sounds, colours, thoughts etc, yet your conscious
mind allows you to focus upon what is pertinent or relevant to
you at that moment.
If you take that conscious
awareness and point it inside of yourself instead of outside
into the world, you begin to become aware of your inner self,
your subconscious self, which is the part of you that we work
with in hypnosis.

next issue

Interesting Stuff
Journal for Clinical Psychology January 1985
41(1):35-41 Effectiveness of Hypnosis
as an Adjunct to Behavioral Weight Management A
Survey of Psychotherapy Literature by Alfred A. Barrios,
Ph.D.
“This study examined the effect of
adding hypnosis to a behavioral weight-management program on
short and long term weight change. One hundred nine subjects,
who ranged in age from 17 to 67, completed a behavioral
treatment either with or without the addition of hypnosis. At
the end of the 9-week program, both interventions resulted in
significant weight
reduction. However, at the 8 month and
2 year follow-ups, the hypnosis clients showed significant
additional weight loss, while those in the behavioral
treatment exhibited little further
change. More of the subjects who
used hypnosis also achieved and maintained their
personal weight goals.”

Not So Serious
Stuff
My therapist told me
the way to achieve true
inner peace is to finish what I start. So far today,
I have finished two bags of chips and a chocolate
bar
I feel better already.
******** The new employee stood
before the paper shredder looking confused. "Need some
help?" a secretary, walking by, asked. "Yes," he
replied, "how does this thing work?" "Simple," she said,
taking the fat report from his hand and feeding it into
the shredder. "Thanks, but where do the copies come
out?"
