What is Hypnosis Anyway? - Part II of III

We are amazing learning machines and we learn behaviours and habits and then our unconscious mind automates them and does them on auto pilot so that we do not have to think about doing them.

Your unconscious mind has within it all your long-term memory. Just about every blade of grass that you have seen in your entire lifetime is stored away in your long-term memory that serves as an amazing storage centre. These memories affect us in varying ways, some more than others. Sometimes our ability to remember them is not as fluid as we need, as it is often not necessary to have all our memory in the forefront of our minds. For example, right now you are unlikely to be thinking about everything that happened to you on your last birthday, however, me just mentioning it, you can dig into your unconscious, long-term memory and remember.

Another example is if you have ever seen a live stand up comedy show. You watch the comedian and laugh (or not as the case may be!) heartily as you listen to lots and lots of jokes. Then when you leave the venue, you can remember none of them, or one or two at best! Then, a week later, a friend that you were with can say to you "do you remember such and such a joke from last weeks comedian" and you think "oh yeeeaaah!" as you bring that information out from your long-term memory. You know that you know the joke, it was just not at the forefront of your conscious mind, it was tucked away in the deeper unconscious.

Your unconscious mind knows more about you than you consciously think you know. Sound confusing? Well, just think, you are currently breathing, your heart is beating (I do hope!) you are digesting, your body is regulating its body temperature, it is doing a range of wonderful things without you having to consciously think about it. You are not sitting around thinking "I really must remember to breathe". We are not machines, there is an intelligence within us that knows how to do these things, and it is that intelligence that we tap into with hypnosis.

Your unconscious mind is where you get your gut feelings, your instincts and intuition that communicates with you sporadically from time to time. Like when sometimes, someone can be saying all the right words to you, but you get a different feeling about them.

Your unconscious mind is a bit like a computer. Throughout your entire lifetime it has been programmed with all your experiences, relationships, interpretations of the world, influences and all this has culminated in your computer functioning with that programming. Hypnosis is simply a way of accessing that computer and updating that programming so that it becomes instinctive and intuitive for you to make the changes that please you.

Your unconscious mind is the seat of your emotions and where your behaviours exist and it is the part of you that we work with in hypnosis. Hypnosis is a way of us stepping over your conscious mind and accessing the unconscious mind to make powerful and profound changes.

Now, I am sure that you have experienced natural trance states many times before, in fact I know it. For example, when you have been driving in a car and thought to yourself "ooh, how did I get here?" or when you have been reading a book and you've turned the page and thought "I have no idea what I have just read, I am going to have to read it all again". I can remember being at school watching my history teacher teach me, yet my mind was a million miles away wishing I was doing something else. All common experiences, daydream like states that we all experience, many times a day. The only difference between these naturally occurring states and those that we use in therapeutic hypnosis, is that with the hypnosis, you intend to enter the state, you are in control of it and it is just like a slightly amplified, deeper version of the state. That is it. Sometimes it is simply like sitting in a chair with your eyes closed, not the magical mystical or unusual experience that some people are led to believe it is.

What Is Spirituality?

What is this illusive thing that people go looking for called Spirituality?

Spirit is 1/3 of the individualized entity; the body or ego that we know ourselves as being alive. By our very nature we are already spiritual and everything that we do is spiritual; we do not have to go looking for it.

Many people spend a lifetime looking for spirituality and they never find it; you cannot find what is not lost or already is. What they are really looking for is spiritual awareness, an awareness of that which gives us life and mobility; an awareness of self.

Many people confuse religion for spirituality, but religion is man’s attempt to explain spirituality and is a part of being spiritual as all things are. You will hear people say, "This or that person is very spiritual" but that is not really accurate. There are people who are more spiritually aware than others. But you are also spiritual, so there is no need to feel left out or less spiritual. Your spirituality can be developed consciously as awareness, but your spirit is already complete as is.

You will not find your spirituality in Tibet or high on the mountain or in the hut of some spiritual guru. There is no place to look for it, because you are already there. The awareness of spirituality comes with the desire to be spiritually aware. Once you have decided that it is what you want, the opportunities will come to you automatically. The people who will best serve you will be drawn to you, and you will begin to notice them. You will begin to notice subtle changes in your environment and your life’s circumstances.

You more than likely will begin to move away from your current friends and even relationships as they no longer serve your purpose. As cold as that may seem, it is because you have begun to learn a new language and they can no longer understand or relate to you. Many will try and discourage you because they don’t want to be left behind. As you begin to develop this other part of self, you will start to notice things around you that eluded you before. Your senses will become more acute, you will begin to care more about your body and your health. You will understand and have great empathy for how your ego struggles to survive in what sometimes seems to be a harsh world. You will also draw like minded people to you, to replace the ones left behind who are there to support you in your creations.

Your newly developed spirituality will open doors you never knew existed. It will be as though you have discovered a whole new set of tools you never knew you had. Your life will have new meaning and you will no longer feel like a victim, but as a creator of your own circumstances and destiny. You will begin to see your intimate connection to all others and all things. Your newly found awareness does not excuse you from your physical journey but it does give it new meaning. You will never be the same, nor will you want to go back.

You will not only use your five senses more completely but you will begin to discover or maybe even develop your other psychic senses. Can you image adding on five or more senses to the ones you are already aware of and using? The possibilities for new experiences are infinite as you now begin to see yourself differently. You will also develop the ability to remove yourself from your body and view yourself from a distance as the silent observer of your own life; silent, patient and empathetic – your very own spiritual guide. You will begin to truly understand, appreciate and embrace the term "outside the box" because that is where your attention and experience will be.

I can’t image a greater sense of security in knowing that you can never be judged spiritually, never be punished and that you have absolute unconditional freedom to do anything you can imagine and that it is your only purpose. Judgment and punishment are physical attributes of this life that you will not experience in the afterlife. Unconditional love and freedom is what you are spiritually and it has no limitations. The essence of who you are individually will always be, and cannot be destroyed. It is also the nature of all things to move to a higher state of being; to improve one’s experience.

Your new spiritual awareness begins when you decide it does, and because you are reading this now; it has already started. Remember also that spiritual awareness is not an end unto itself; it is the trip that brings the greatest rewards and pleasures.

All thoughts are valid in the spiritual world, read as much as you can from many different writers and authors. Never allow yourself to be boxed in by someone else’s thoughts or even your own. As you reach out you will begin to formulate a thought process that is uniquely yours and changes.

Interesting Stuff

Study conducted by Dr. Whorwell, University Hospital of South Manchester, in the United Kingdom.

Fifty patients suffering from irritable bowel syndrome were asked to fill out questionnaires about their symptoms. Half of the patients were hypnotized and half were not. After a few months new questionnaires determined that the patients who had been hypnotized had less abdominal pain, less bloating, less nausea, less gas pain, and fewer backaches. Additionally, the hypnotized patients said they felt more in control of their lives and did not call in sick as often as they did before having the hypnosis. Also, they did not need to visit their doctors as often as they did before the hypnosis. The patients in the study who did not receive hypnosis did not show these improvements. This study proves that hypnosis not only relieves symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome, but also improves quality of life for those patients.

Fertility

Prof. Levitas, of Soroka Hospital in Israel, studied a group of women having in-vitro fertilization (IVF). In the group selected for hypnosis, right before the embryos were being transferred into the woman's uterus, she was hypnotized to relax during the implantation procedure. In this study twice as many women in the group who were hypnotized actually became pregnant. In the group where the women were told to relax but were not hypnotized, half as many became pregnant
